Portion of Route 1055 to be Closed for Bridge Replacement

04/12/2006
The Douglas County Public Works Department announces that Route 1055 between N 800 Road and Route 458 (N 1000 Road) will be closed to through traffic beginning Thursday, April 27th for replacement of the bridge located approximately _ mile south of Route 458 and immediately north of the Cedar Hill Gun Club. A signed detour will be established. Traveling from north to south, the detour follows Route 458 (N 1000 Road) east to Route 1057 (E 1900 Road), south on Route 1057 to Route 460 (N 700 Road), and west on Route 460 to Vinland. Local access to properties within the project limits will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. However, construction activities will dictate the available access direction. Directional signing for accessing the Cedar Hill Gun Club will be installed and maintained. The purpose of the project is to replace the structurally deficient bridge and to improve safety for this portion of Route 1055. In addition to replacing the bridge, the project entails reconstructing a portion of Route 1055. The first two curves immediately south of the bridge will be improved to meet 55-mph design criteria. The reconstructed roadway will have 8-foot wide paved shoulders, as will the new bridge. Construction is anticipated to be substantially complete by the end of September 2006, weather permitting. The construction contract allows the contractor 95 working days, or about five months (with good weather) to complete the project. This construction project is approximately 85% funded by federal transportation funds with Douglas County funding the remaining approximately 15% of construction costs. Douglas County is funding 100% of design engineering costs, right-of-way acquisition costs, and utility relocation costs. The federal transportation funds are administered through KDOT. King's Construction Company, Inc. of Oskaloosa was awarded the construction contract by KDOT with a bid of $1,059,992.
