Route 1055 to be Re-Opened to Traffic

09/14/2006
The Douglas County Public Works Department announces that Route 1055 between N 800 Road and Route 458 (N 1000 Road) will be opened to through traffic by 2:00 PM, Friday, September 15th. The roadway segment has been closed since April 27, 2006 for replacement of the bridge located approximately _ mile south of Route 458 and immediately north of the Cedar Hill Gun Club, as well as geometric improvements to the roadway in the vicinity of the bridge. The roadway is being opened to traffic approximately two weeks ahead of the original project schedule. Construction of the bridge replacement and roadway improvement project is substantially complete. Although the road is being opened to through traffic, some construction items such as seeding remain to be completed. Any remaining items of work will be accomplished with traffic allowed through the project area. Motorists are urged to use caution through the project area, and to heed construction signing and flaggers. The purpose of the project was to replace a structurally deficient bridge and to improve safety for this portion of Route 1055. In addition to replacing the bridge, the project entailed reconstructing the first two curves immediately south of the bridge. The reconstructed roadway has 8-foot wide paved shoulders, as does the new bridge. This construction project is approximately 85% funded by federal transportation funds, administered through KDOT, with Douglas County funding the remaining approximately 15% of construction costs. Douglas County was responsible for 100% of design engineering costs, right-of-way acquisition costs, and utility relocation costs. King's Construction Company, Inc. of Oskaloosa was awarded the construction contract by KDOT with a bid of $1,059,992.
