05/17/2007
Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Chief Mark Bradford arrived in Greensburg, Kan. Thursday morning to take over from another department leader as the incident management team commander. Division Chief Bill Stark has been serving as incident commander in Greensburg this week, and Bradford will assume the role of incident commander for the entire tornado recovery operation on Friday for the next week. Six Lawrence police officers are in Greensburg this week, and 10 additional officers will relieve them Sunday for a one-week deployment. In addition to the four Douglas County employees assisting in Greensburg for the past week, six more employees are joining the effort this week. Keith Campbell, deputy county clerk for elections; Tim Reisbig, a public safety dispatcher in the Emergency Communications Center; Jackie Waggoner, director of purchasing; Mike Perkins, director of operations for the Department of Public Works, and two Sheriff's Department employees departed Thursday for a one-week deployment. The city and county employees are providing skills requested through the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. They volunteered for the assignment with the approval of their department administrators, and remain on their respective local government payroll while assisting with the Greensburg tornado disaster.
