Lawrence and Douglas County Employees Assist with Flooding in Southeast Kansas

Eleven employees of the City of Lawrence and Douglas County were deployed to assist with the flooding emergency in Southeast Kansas this week. Douglas County Sheriff Ken McGovern, Sheriff's Dept. Lt. Kari Wempe and Assistant County Administrator Pam Madl spent three days in Independence. McGovern assisted with plans, Wempe served as public information officer and Madl assisted with finance. Debbie Sparkes of the Douglas County Budget Division was deployed to Fredonia for three days to assist with finance. In addition, three Douglas County Sheriff's deputies and four Lawrence police officers went to Allen County for a 12-hour shift to assist with law enforcement. The employees remain on the county or city payroll during their deployment, and any overtime and reasonable travel expenses may be reimbursed to the county or city by FEMA.
