DOUGLAS COUNTY GOES GREEN

05/08/2008
More than 42% of all waste generated in the US is recyclable. An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now! But.Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours -- or the equivalent of a half a gallon of gasoline. On average, it costs $30 per ton to recycle trash, $50 to send it to the landfill, and $65 to $75 to incinerate it. So, what does all this mean1/2 It means it is time to start making a difference! All Douglas County employees in the Courthouse and Judicial & Law Enforcement Center are invited and encouraged to participate in the County's BRAND NEW recycling program! Acceptable materials within this program are: - #1 & #2 Plastics - Aluminum & Steel - Chipboard - Corrugated Cardboard - Paper of many kinds - Newspaper The County will be working with Community Living Opportunities (CLO) and the City of Lawrence to provide this service. CLO will pick up all plastics, metals, newspaper and chipboard weekly, and the City will pick up paper and cardboard weekly. This program is catered to the needs of individual departments, so the items being recycled within each office may vary. This program will begin Thursday, May 1. The week preceding, departments will be properly educated on acceptable and unacceptable materials, bin locations, and what they can do to ensure this program's success.
