Route 1055 (6th Street) in Baldwin City to be Opened to Traffic through Construction

12/18/2008
Route 1055 (6th Street) in Baldwin City between Orange Street (N 200 Road) and Indiana Street will be opened to traffic through construction by 5:00 P.M., Friday, December 19th . Although the road section will be opened to traffic, construction is not completed. Construction items remaining to be completed include reconstructing the Orange Street (N 200 Road) intersection, placing the final lift of asphalt surface, and construction of sidewalks. Construction work will be suspended until spring 2009. When work resumes in the spring, the road will again be closed to allow the contractor to complete the remaining work items. The county's contractor has 40 working days left to complete the remaining items. Factoring in weather delays, Douglas County estimates it will take the contractor 2 - 3 months to complete the remaining work items next spring. The project involves reconstructing Route 1055 (6th Street) from Orange Street (N 200 Road) to Indiana Street. The road is being reconstructed to a 31-foot back-to-back of curb urban collector-type roadway with storm sewers and sidewalks. Douglas County awarded the construction contract to King's Construction Company, Inc. of Oskaloosa. King's Construction was the low bidder with a bid of $1,109,918. Baldwin City and Douglas County agreed to share all construction and engineering costs, except for sidewalks. Baldwin City is responsible for all sidewalk costs. Baldwin City is also responsible for all utility relocations and required easement acquisitions.
