PRESS RELEASE REELEASE DATE: 12/19/08 CONTACT INFO: Charles Branson Douglas County District Attorney 785-841-0211 cbranson@douglas-county.com Jones Sentenced for June Murder Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announces Kellam D. Jones, 17, was sentenced today in District Court for the second degree murder of Roland Klundt, attempted aggravated robbery, and attempted aggravated burglary. Klundt was 20 years old at the time of his death and was a Baker University Student. The Honorable Michael J. Malone sentenced Jones to the aggravated sentence of 170 months and 36 months post release supervision. In the early morning hours of June 7 Jones and Gage Hauk went to Klundt's home at 1311 Delaware Street to rob him of drugs and money. In an attempt to stop the robbery, Klundt shot and killed Hauk. Jones, who was armed with a rifle, then fired approximately eight shots and killed Klundt. "No sentence can restore what has been lost because of Jones' crimes," Branson said. "We have a problem in Douglas County with young people associating themselves with drugs and guns and this is the result. Jones' lengthy sentence will surely test our prison system and whether or not it can rehabilitate someone." Jones was 16 at the time the crime was committed and was originally charged in Juvenile Court. Branson filed a motion to certify Jones as an adult. After a hearing in September, Judge Malone found that Jones could be tried as an adult for his role in the killing. He will serve his sentence in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections. -30-
