Construction to Resume on Route 1055 (6th Street) in Baldwin City

03/30/2009
Construction work on the Route 1055 (6th Street) reconstruction project in Baldwin City will resume on Monday, April 6. Douglas County anticipates closing Route 1055 (6th Street) to through traffic between Orange Street (N 200 Road) and Indiana Street on Monday, April 13. This section of Route 1055 (6th Street) will remain closed to through traffic until project completion, currently anticipated by the end of June 2009. Beginning April 6, weather permitting, Orange Street (N 200 Road) will be closed immediately east of its intersection with Route 1055 (6th Street) for construction of storm sewer and a shoo-fly detour in the southeast quadrant of the intersection. Following construction of the shoo-fly detour, Route 1055 (6th Street) from Orange Street to Indiana Street will then be closed to through traffic for the duration of the project. The Route 1055 (6th Street) closure is anticipated to begin Monday, April 13, weather permitting. The reconstruction of Route 1055 (6th Street) from Indiana Street to Orange Street (N 200 Road) was begun in August 2008, and work was suspended and the road reopened to traffic in December 2008. Remaining project work items include reconstructing the Route 1055 (6th Street)/Orange Street intersection, sidewalks, bridge railing, final asphalt surfacing, and seeding. Douglas County Public Works Department anticipates this section of Route 1055 will be closed from April 13 through June 2009. A detour will be marked within the Baldwin City limits. The detour follows Orange Street (N 200 Road), 3rd Street, and High Street. Local access to properties within the project limits will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. The project involves reconstructing Route 1055 (6th Street) from Orange Street (N 200 Road) to Indiana Street. The road is being reconstructed to a 31-foot back-to-back of curb urban collector-type roadway with storm sewers and sidewalks. In July 2008, Douglas County awarded the construction contract to King's Construction Company, Inc. of Oskaloosa. King's Construction was the low bidder with a bid of $1,109,918. Baldwin City and Douglas County are sharing all construction and engineering costs, except for sidewalks. Baldwin City is responsible for all sidewalk costs. Baldwin City is also responsible for all utility relocations and required easement acquisitions.
