Lawrence Resident Convicted of Battery

PRESS RELEASE RELEASE DATE: 07/13/09 CONTACT INFO: Charles Branson Douglas County District Attorney 785-841-0211 cbranson@douglas-county.com Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announces today that Lawrence resident Lawrence Jackson, 53, was convicted today in Douglas County District Court of one count of Battery. The case against Jackson began on May 14, 2009 when the Lawrence Police Department (LPD) received an anonymous call regarding a dispute in an apartment. LPD arrived at the 1900 block of West 25th Street and began knocking at the door. Jackson would not allow the victim to answer the door, but when he went to the kitchen and left her alone in a bedroom, she rushed for the front door and ran to the officers. Jackson then proceeded to leap from the 2nd floor balcony of the apartment, but was promptly apprehended by officers. The Defendant took the stand and claimed he did not hit or hurt the victim and claimed she had actually been the one to hit him. The jury was not swayed by his testimony. The trial began today in the Division Five Courtroom of The Honorable Paula B. Martin, the jury was selected before noon, the case went to the jury at 2:45 and the verdict was returned at 3:55. Assistant District Attorney Mike Allen and legal intern Chris Mann prosecuted the case. Jackson will be sentenced on July 22nd at 10:15 a.m. -30-
