The Douglas County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) held its annual Reorganization Meeting at 8:30AM at LDCFM Station #5. The LEPC is responsible for developing an emergency plan to prepare for and respond to chemical emergencies within the community. It is the main function of the LEPC to look after community interests in regard to hazardous incidents that may occur there. During this meeting, the LEPC presented 3 Preparedness Partner Awards to the following: ~ Lisa Patterson (City of Lawrence), in recognition of her leadership of the Public Information Officers and dedication to serving the citizens of Lawrence and Douglas County. ~ Kim Ens (Lawrence Douglas County Health Department), in recognition for her leadership of Together Prepared and her proactive approach to planning for vulnerable populations within Douglas County. ~ City of Lecompton, in recognition of their proactive approach to promoting personal preparedness and emergency planning for all citizens and response agencies. The LEPC also receives emergency release and chemical inventory information submitted by local industrial facilities and makes this information available to the community it serves. In addition to its formal responsibilities, the LEPC often serves as a focal point for information and discussions about hazardous substances. The LEPC's ability to improve and maintain the safety and health of its community is greatly enhanced by the support of an informed citizenry.
