Chip sealing to resume on Douglas County roads

08/11/2009
Douglas County Public Works announces the second phase of 2009 chip seal operations for various county-maintained roads will commence Thursday, August 13, 2009. We anticipate the second phase to be completed by August 25, 2009, weather permitting. Vance Brothers, Inc. is the county's contractor for this work. They will commence sealing operations on Route 1061 immediately south of K-10 highway, then move to the 8-mile long section of Route 1061 between Route 458 (N 1000 Road) and US-56 highway. In this season's second phase of chip sealing beginning August 13, the contractor will seal 29 miles at various locations around the county. Earlier this summer, the contractor chip sealed approximately 25 miles. Traffic control during county chip seal operations will consist of pilot vehicles and flaggers. Motorists should expect delays when traveling on roads during chip seal operations. Properly following pilot vehicles and keeping speeds low when traveling through chip seal areas will reduce the chance of getting asphalt emulsion on your vehicle. Chip sealing is a process intended to preserve and protect the existing pavement. It seals small cracks in the pavement to prevent the intrusion of moisture into the pavement base, and protects oxidized asphalt surfaces from becoming more brittle and losing fine surface aggregate through raveling. Emulsified asphalt is applied to the road surface, and small aggregate ("chips") is spread on the surface to keep vehicle tires out of the emulsified asphalt seal material. The county's contractor will utilize expanded-shale chips that are darker in color and lighter in weight than limestone chips. The contract cost for the second phase of chip sealing is approximately $579,000. The contract cost for first phase work was approximately $416,000. First phase chip sealing was to complete unfinished work from last year's contract. For further information, please contact the Douglas County Public Works Department at 785-832-5293.
