Traffic restricted to one lane on two Route 458 bridges

08/26/2009
The Douglas County Public Works Department announces that commencing Monday, August 31 two Route 458 bridges located on the southwest side of Clinton Lake will be reduced to one-lane traffic to accommodate bridge rehabilitation work. The bridges carry Route 458 over the Wakarusa River arm and Rock Creek arm of Clinton Lake. Traffic at each bridge will be controlled by temporary traffic signals, which will allow alternate directions of traffic on one lane only. The department anticipates the lane reductions through the end of November 2009. Motorists should expect a travel time delay of approximately two minutes at each bridge, or four minutes total, in excess of unrestricted travel time. The one lane on each bridge open to traffic will be approximately 6" narrower than the standard lane width. The normal 2'-wide shoulder between the travel lane and the bridge rail will be utilized as part of the open lane. The project involves abutment alterations to remove both expansion joints for the Rock Creek bridge, and to remove one expansion joint and replace one expansion joint for the Wakarusa River bridge. The project includes milling each bridge deck, patching deteriorated concrete, and resurfacing each bridge deck with silica fume concrete. The work will be carried out one lane at a time. The Board of County Commissioners awarded a contract to Wildcat Construction of Topeka for the project. Wildcat Construction submitted the low bid in the amount of $424,512. Douglas County's Capital Improvement Program is funding the project.
