Route 438 construction to disrupt E 800 Road traffic

10/01/2009
Beginning Monday, October 5, E 800 Road will be closed at Route 438 (N 1800 Road) due to construction activities on Route 438. Construction activities in the eastern portion of the Route 438 improvement project necessitate the E 800 Road closure. Route 438 between Route 1029 and K-10 will remain closed to through traffic. A signed detour utilizing K-10 highway, US-40 highway and Route 1029 (E 600 Road) is provided. Traffic accessing local properties within the project limits will be allowed to travel on Route 438 to those properties. However, beginning October 5, traffic will not be able to turn onto E 800 Road from Route 438 (or onto Route 438 from E 800 Road), or cross Route 438 on E 800 Road. Access to properties on E 800 Road north of Route 438 is available by using E 900 Road and N 1850 Road. Access to properties on E 800 Road south of Route 438 is available from US-40. Work on the Route 438 improvement project is on schedule to meet the goal of opening to traffic by November 21, 2009. Grading work in the western 75% of the project length is substantially complete. This portion of the project involves total roadway reconstruction. Grading work in the eastern 25% of the project will commence October 5. In the eastern portion of the project, shoulders will be added to the existing roadway, and roadside slopes will be flattened. Paving is expected to commence on October 8 in the western portion of the project. All dates are "weather permitting". The purpose of the project is to improve the safety for this section of roadway. The project is 2.26 miles long from the Route 1029 curve to the existing widened portion of Route 438 just west of the K-10 (SLT) intersection. The improvements include adding 8-feet wide paved shoulders to the road and flattening the frontslopes and backslopes of ditches. The Board of County Commissioners awarded a construction contract to Hamm Construction, Inc. for this project. Hamm was the low bidder with a bid of $1,627,607. Construction is being funded from Douglas County's Capital Improvement Program.
