Military Discharge Papers Filing Press Release

11/05/2009
PRESS RELEASE Release Date: Immediate Contact: Kay Pesnell Douglas County Register of Deeds (785) 832-5103 kpesnell@douglas-county.com Filing Military Discharge Papers With Veterans Day approaching, Register of Deeds Kay Pesnell invites all military personnel residing in Douglas County to file their original discharge papers with her office. There is no charge for this service. Military discharge papers are the forms that a veteran receives when he or she separates from service in the armed forces of the United States. Today, the most common document proving the veteran's active military service is the DD 214. Veterans are urged by the armed services to record their discharge papers in the county where they reside for safekeeping. Doing so can make it easier for the veteran to get a certified copy of their record should they need one to apply for benefits. In Kansas, military discharge papers can be filed with the county Register of Deeds. With few exceptions, the Kansas Legislature has limited access to military records to the dischargee and their immediate family members. The Register of Deeds makes every effort to insure that this personal information is properly protected and not available to the public. The filing is done while you wait. Five copies are provided at no charge. The Register of Deeds office is located on the third floor of the Douglas County courthouse at 11th and Massachusetts Street. Office hours are 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, contact the Register of Deeds at 832-5282.
