Route 9 to be closed between US-24 and Kansas Turnpike

11/06/2009
Contractors for the Kansas Turnpike Authority will close Douglas County Route 9 (E 1500 Road) to through traffic between US-24/40 highway and the Kansas Turnpike (I-70) beginning Monday, November 9. Closure is required due to the resumption of bridge construction activities associated with the Kansas Turnpike (I-70) bridges over Route 9. It is anticipated Route 9 will remain closed until late spring 2010. No detour route is marked. US-24/59 highway (N 2nd Street in Lawrence) and US-24/40 should be used as an alternate route. Construction activities will include removing and reconstructing the existing eastbound Kansas Turnpike (I-70) bridge over Route 9. During this winter and spring 2010, the replacement bridge will be constructed to about _ of its ultimate width. It is currently anticipated by the end of May 2010 eastbound traffic on I-70 will be returned to the eastbound bridge, and Route 9 will be reopened to traffic. Once reopened to traffic in late spring 2010, Route 9 will remain open until late 2010. Kansas Turnpike bridge construction activities to complete the full width of both eastbound and westbound I-70 bridges will resume in late 2010, with completion scheduled for November 2011.
