Second Suspect Charged in Douglas County Cockfighting Operation

CONTACT INFO: Charles Branson Douglas County District Attorney 785-841-0211 cbranson@douglas-county.com Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announced today that Jose Guerrero, 40, of Eudora was charged with Unlawful Conduct of Cockfighting, a level 10, nonperson, felony. The charge stems from yesterday's raid at a home located at 2174 North 700 Road in Eudora where 169 birds, including 118 gamecocks, 48 hens and 3 chicks were removed from the property. The charge against Guerrero and the related charges against Ezequiel Olivas are the first known charges following the July 1 strengthening of Kansas laws against cockfighting. Kansas and all its bordering states classify cockfighting as a felony charge. The charges listed are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. -30-
