Kansas City Man Pleads to Discharging a Firearm

CONTACT INFO: Charles Branson Douglas County District Attorney 785-841-0211 cbranson@douglas-county.com Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announced today Jerome Gilbert III, 19 of Kansas City, Kansas entered a plea of no contest to Criminal Discharge of a Firearm (level 7/person/felony) and Possession of Marijuana (class A/non person/misdemeanor). The charges stem from an early morning March 7 incident near the intersection of 23rd and Iowa Streets. An officer patrolling in the area heard the loud screech of tires and observed a dark colored Honda leaving the parking lot of the Presto Gas Station at a high rate of speed. The officer witnessed Mr. Gilbert running after the vehicle and observed him firing a gun at the fleeing vehicle. Mr. Gilbert ran from the scene, but was apprehended after a foot chase. Mr. Gilbert will be sentenced July 16 at 1:30 p.m. Depending on his criminal history score, he faces 11-34 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for the Discharge of Firearm and up to one year in jail and a $2,500.00 fine for Possession of Marijuana. The hearing was held in the Division Four courtroom of the Honorable Michael J. Malone; the case was investigated by the Lawrence Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Deborah Moody. -30-
