Pavement resurfacing to restrict traffic on 31st Street

08/04/2010
Douglas County Public Works Department announces that commencing Monday, August 9, traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction on 31st Street from Louisiana Street west one-half mile to the Lawrence city limits. The traffic restriction is necessary to allow for asphalt milling, patching, and overlay operations. Weather permitting, work will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, August 20. Motorists should anticipate significant delays when traveling through the project area, and should avoid the area if possible. Work will commence in the two eastbound lanes on Monday, August 9. Traffic will be shifted north to the two current westbound lanes to allow for two-way traffic, one lane in each direction. When work in the two eastbound lanes is completed, the work area will shift to the two current westbound lanes, with two-way traffic allowed on the two current eastbound lanes. Work will entail milling the existing asphalt surface 2" deep. Weak pavement areas will then be patched full-depth. Finally, the contractor will overlay the surface with a 2"-3" deep layer of asphalt. The Board of County Commissioners awarded a contract to low bidder Bettis Asphalt & Construction for this work. The work on 31st Street is part of a larger contract for surfacing work on approximately nine miles of county roadways. The low bid for the 31st Street portion of the contract was $268,846.
