Man Charged in Bicycle Hit and Run

Young was charged in Douglas County District Court with the felony charges of Aggravated Battery and Criminal Damage to Property for an altercation involving several bicyclists. On July 15, 2010 Young, 48, of Baldwin City allegedly drove his pick-up truck into the lead cyclist of a group of riders in the 1000 block of East 1400 Road. The lead cyclist was thrown from his bike causing injuries to the cyclist and damage to his bike. Young was arrested after extensive investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff's Department who canvassed the area for motorists fitting the description of the vehicle driven by Young. The suspect was arrested on August 30, 2010 and bonded out of jail on a $10,000 cash or surety bond. His next appearance date is September 14, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in the Pro Tem Division of the Douglas County District Court. Young faces from 11-34 months in custody on the aggravated battery charge and five - 13 months on the felony criminal damage charge. He will be subject to probation or prison time depending on any prior criminal history he may have. The named charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. -30-
