Brown, 34, was sentenced today in the Division Six Courtroom of the Honorable Peggy C. Kittel for her convictions stemming from her October 4 jury trial. She was ordered to serve 14 months for Counts One and Two of Aggravated Endangering a Child with the time on the two charges to run consecutive to each other and 14 months for Count Three of Lewd and Lascivious Behavior with the time to run concurrent to the time ordered in Counts One and Two. Her 28 month controlling sentenced will be served in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections. The State filed a Motion for Upward Departure and the Court found substantial and compelling reasons for the departure and sentenced Ms. Brown to the maximum amount of time allowed by Kansas Statute for the crimes she committed. If the State had not filed the Motion for Upward Departure, Ms. Brown would have received probation. Detectives with the Lawrence Police Department began investigating Ms. Brown when a Topeka family contacted them and claimed two of their daughters had been sexually assaulted by Ms. Brown's husband. Charges were filed against her when it was discovered she was aware of the abuse of the children and she had deliberately exposed herself to one of the children. Mr. Brown's trial is scheduled to begin January 24. -30-
