Charges Filed In December 6, 2002 Incident

Case no. 03CR0265 has been filed against John T. Simmons charging four counts of battery, and one count of disorderly conduct. These charges stem from the incident that occurred on December 6, 2002 at 10th and Massachusetts St. in Lawrence. One count of battery and one count of disorderly conduct were originally filed against Simmons in Lawrence Municipal Court on December 6, 2002. That case was dismissed and has been incorporated in 03CR0265. Charges against additional individuals have not been ruled out. The decision regarding additional charges may be deferred until the proceedings against Simmons are concluded. Based upon all the information available at this time, there is no indication that this incident was motivated by bias or prejudice against a particular group or specific person. Formal charges are merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
