Lawrence Man Sentenced for Aggravated Criminal Sodomy & Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child

05/20/2011
Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announces Lawrence resident Richard Gonzales, 69, was sentenced Thursday in the Division Two Courtroom of the Honorable Sally D. Pokorny to the mandatory Jessica's law sentence of 25 years to life in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections for each of his two January 14 jury convictions of Aggravated Criminal Sodomy and Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child. The Judge ordered the sentences to run concurrently. "My hope for the family is this outcome will give them some closure and they can move forward with their lives knowing Mr. Gonzalez will effectively spend the remainder of his life in prison," said Branson. Detectives with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office began investigating the case in August 2009 when the mother of the victim reported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital that her daughter may have been sexually assaulted by the father of her daycare provider at Miles of Smiles Child Daycare Center in southwest Lawrence. Charges were filed against Mr. Gonzalez when it was discovered he inappropriately touched the victim on several occasions at the daycare, where he lived with his daughter, the daycare owner. The case was investigated by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and was prosecuted by Chief Assistant District Attorney Amy McGowan. -30- CONTACT INFO: Charles Branson Douglas County District Attorney 785-841-0211 cbranson@douglas-county.com
