Proclamation: County Commission proclaims April 28, 2011 as "Worker's Memorial Day"

Office of the County Commission P R O C L A M A T I O N For Douglas County, Kansas WHEREAS: Every year thousands of American workers are killed by workplace injuries and occupational disease; and WHEREAS: Millions more are injured and thousands are permanently disabled; and WHEREAS: April 28 falls on the anniversary of the enactment of federal legislation creating the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which was signed into law by President Richard Nixon on April 28, 1971; and WHEREAS: Since its inception, OSHA has assisted employers and employees to create better working conditions, and has helped to cut workplace fatalities by more than 60% and occupational injury and illness by 40%; and WHEREAS: Concerned citizens are determined to prevent future tragedies by renewing efforts to seek stronger safety and health protections, better standards and enforcement, fair and just compensation, and to recognize those who do make workplace safety a priority; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of Douglas County, Kansas, that we remember workers in our community and across the country that have been injured, disabled or killed on the job by proclaiming April 28, 2011 as "Workers' Memorial Day."
