Proclamation: County Commission celebrates the State of Kansas' 1505h Anniversary

Office of the County Commission P R O C L A M A T I O N For Douglas County, Kansas Whereas, the City of Lecompton is officially recognized as the only official Territorial Capital of Kansas from 1855- 1861 and the events which occurred in Lecompton during that time were pivotal in the creation of Kansas as a free state and dramatically altered the course of America's history; Whereas, in order to celebrate the State of Kansas' 150th Anniversary and recognition of the State's historic opposition to slavery in the United States and the World, an open invitation has been sent to elected State representatives and officials; Whereas, such a celebration would benefit Lecompton and Douglas County by not only highlighting 150 years of Kansas Statehood but also recognizing the newly created Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area and provide exposure to Douglas County and the State of Kansas history; and Whereas, such exposure would emphasize Douglas County and State of Kansas' travel and tourism industry benefiting the economy. NOW, THEREFORE, be it proclaimed that the Board of County Commissioners of Douglas County, Kansas, fully supports and endorses the City of Lecompton and The Lecompton Historical Society in hosting State Legislators and other State officials in Lecompton for the purposes of celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Kansas Statehood and recognizing Kansans' historic opposition to slavery.
