SEPTEMBER: NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH AND ONLINE CAMPAIGN

09/01/2011
September is National Preparedness Month, and during this time, local agencies are sponsoring the nationwide effort further encouraging all of Douglas County to take simple steps to prepare themselves and their families for emergencies or disasters that may affect their homes, businesses and communities. For you, this may be reviewing what you already have in place or looking at preparedness for the first time. No matter what stage you are in with your preparedness goals, events throughout 2011 (severe weather outbreaks, temporary closures of I-70, power outages, fires, extreme heat, flooding, winter storms) remind us of the importance of being alert and prepared for the unexpected - whether natural or man-made. During the month of September, Douglas County Emergency Management will focus on remembering our past and preparing for our future through the public education campaign "30 Days, 30 Ways". The campaign introduces steps to take to better prepare yourself, family, business, or organization for short-term to long-term interruptions. Join us any point during the month by visiting our social media sites for the latest tips. Douglas County Emergency Management and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical invite you to join us for the 5th Annual Douglas County Preparedness Fair. This event is free, open to everyone, and will be held on Saturday, September 24th at South Middle School (2734 Louisiana St., Lawrence) from 9AM - 11AM. Preparedness is a shared responsibility that includes all individuals, businesses, and communities; so join us and together we can ensure a community of cities and citizens that are disaster aware and disaster prepared.
