September 29, 2011 For Immediate Release From the Heritage Conservation Council Contact: Jeannette Blackmar, Coordinator, Heritage Conservation Council jblackmar@douglas-county.com 785-330-2878 Eighteen applicants for Heritage Conservation grants seek nearly $940,000 for projects The Heritage Conservation Council announced today that eighteen applicants for Heritage Conservation grants are seeking nearly $940,000 for projects aimed at conserving the rich natural and cultural heritage of Douglas County. The Douglas County Commission allocated $350,000 in the 2011 County budget to assist with the development and creation of natural and cultural heritage conservation projects. "It's great to see the large number of applications and how varied they are in what they want to accomplish", said Ken Grotewiel, Chair of the Heritage Conservation Council. "It is a true testament to the interest and passion there is in this County for conserving and preserving our heritage", added Grotewiel. Three applicants requested funding for major projects, defined as projects needing $105,000 or more to complete. The remaining fifteen applicants requested amounts less than $105,000 for 15 target projects. Three of those applicants requested $5,000 or less. Applicants applied for funding for all allowable funding categories under the grant program: - Historic structures - Prairie; woodlands, waterways; habitat restoration/preservation - Agriculture (working farms; heritage farms: high quality agricultural soils) - Freedom's Frontier themes (Civil War and pre-Civil War heritage; Settlement stories (before and after Civil War); Enduring struggle for freedom) - Pre-settlement history A summary of the grant applications themselves, can be found at: http://www.douglas-county.com/depts/ad/ad_ncht.aspx, or by clicking on the "Heritage Conservation Council" link below. While the application period for funds available for 2011 has closed, the Douglas County Commission has approved another funding round for 2012. The application timeframe for 2012 has not yet been finalized. The Commission created the Heritage Conservation Council to oversee heritage conservation efforts in Douglas County, including the Natural and Cultural Heritage Grant Program.
