Man Enters Plea to Sex Crime After Appeal Was Granted

11/14/2011
Former Lawrence resident Christopher L. Cormack, 41, currently of Abilene, entered a no contest plea to Indecent Liberties with a Child, a level five person felony. Cormack was originally found guilty in 2008 of Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child for incidents while he was a youth group leader at a local church. Cormack appealed his conviction and the Kansas Court of Appeals reversed the verdict after finding the jury was improperly instructed in the law. After the case was overturned, the trial was reset but Cormack entered a plea to the charge of Indecent Liberties with a Child. The victim, now an adult, was consulted and agreed with the plea in the case. "We are relieved the victim will not have to face another trial in this matter," District Attorney Branson said. "Given the time that had passed, it was important for her to know that Mr. Cormack was held accountable for his crime." Cormack will be sentenced on January 10 at 2:00 p.m. in the Division One Courtroom of the Honorable Robert W. Fairchild. By statute, the charge will carry a 25 year mandatory registration as a sex offender. CONTACT INFO: Charles Branson Douglas County District Attorney 785-841-0211 cbranson@douglas-county.com -30-
