Sigma Nu Incident Reviewed By District Attorney's Office

The Douglas County District Attorney's office has completed its review of the incident that occurred on August 13, 2003 at the Sigma Nu house in Lawrence, Kansas. After reviewing all available information, it is concluded that the facts do not support the crime of hazing. In 1992, the statute outlining the elements of hazing was changed from prohibiting a person from participating in the hazing of another to prohibiting a social or fraternal organization from promoting or permitting hazing. K.S.A. 21-3434. Promoting or permitting hazing is a class B nonperson misdemeanor.
