Route 1057 to be closed for Wakarusa River bridge replacement

03/02/2012
The Douglas County Public Works Department announces that Route 1057 (E 1900 Road) will be closed to through-traffic between the interchange at K-10 highway and Route 458 (N 1000 Road) for a project to replace the bridge over the Wakarusa River. The road will be closed Monday, March 12, and the road will remain closed until project completion, currently anticipated to be November 2012. The bridge to be replaced is located approximately 0.5 miles south of K-10 highway on Route 1057. A signed detour will be established. The detour follows K-10 highway east to Route 1061 (E 2200 Road; Church Street in Eudora), thence south to Route 458 (N 1000 Road). Local access to properties within the road closure will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. The purpose of the project is to replace the structurally deficient bridge. The bridge was constructed in 1957. The bridge deck is in poor condition, and the bridge is currently posted for a 15-ton load limit. The existing bridge is 394 feet long with a 24-foot roadway width. The new bridge will be 410 feet long with a 36-foot roadway width (two 12-foot wide driving lanes with two 6-foot wide shoulders). This construction project is 80% funded by federal transportation funds with Douglas County funding the remaining 20% of construction costs. Douglas County is funding 100% of design engineering costs, right-of-way acquisition costs and utility relocation costs. The federal transportation funds are administered through KDOT. Comanche Construction, Inc. of Shawnee Mission, Kansas was awarded the construction contract by KDOT with a low bid of $2,753,110.
