Court to Carry on Some Activities on Furlough Days

04/05/2012
LAWRENCE, Kansas-Although statewide furloughs of court employees will cause most offices of the Douglas County District Court to close on five Fridays in the coming months, judges will be on the job, and court staff paid through the county will assist them so as to reduce disruptions. Please note the following specifics: - Individuals having cases before the Douglas County District Court are advised to attend their scheduled hearings unless notified otherwise. - The Friday traffic dockets will proceed as scheduled. - The Friday limited civil answer docket-which typically involves bill collection cases plus evictions and other landlord-tenant issues-will proceed as scheduled. - The Friday docket of petitions for protection from abuse and protection from stalking will proceed as scheduled. - Individuals seeking to file a petition alleging protection from abuse or protection from stalking on the five furlough days (April 13, April 27, May 11, May 25 and June 8) should go to the Office of the Court Trustee to complete paperwork. - The Office of the Clerk of the District Court will be closed on the five furlough days (April 13, April 27, May 11, May 25 and June 8). As a result, individuals will not be able to pick up marriage licenses, pay traffic fines, file legal actions or conduct any other business with the clerk's office on those days and need to make other arrangements. - Offenders who have appointments with Community Corrections officers should attend their appointments as scheduled. - Probationers who have appointments with Court Services officers on the furlough days (April 13, April 27, May 11, May 25 and June 8) will need to reschedule their appointments. The furloughs have been scheduled because the state Legislature has not provided adequate funding to pay staff through the end of the fiscal year, which ends June 30.
