Proclamation: Commission declares May as "Bike Month" and May 14-18 as "Bike-To-Work-Week."

Office of the County Commission PROCLAMATION For Douglas County, Kansas WHEREAS: For more than a century, the bicycle has been an important part of the lives of most Americans: and WHEREAS: Today, millions of Americans engage in bicycling as an environmentally sound form of transportation, an excellent form of fitness, and a high quality family recreational activity; and WHEREAS: Douglas County seeks to form and foster partnerships with bicyclists and incorporate bicycling as a part of the multi-modal regional transportation system designed to serve all Douglas County residents regardless of their travel mode choice; and WHEREAS: The education of cyclists and motorists as to the proper and safe operation of bicycles and motor vehicles is important to ensure the safety and comfort of all roadway and path users; and WHEREAS: Douglas County seeks to encourage symbiotic partnerships with organizations to promote bicycle awareness and education through the efforts of the Lawrence-Douglas County Bicycle Advisory Committee and other groups; and WHEREAS: The League of American Bicyclists and independent cyclists throughout Kansas are promoting greater public awareness of bicycle operation and safety education in an effort to reduce accidents, injuries and fatalities; and WHEREAS The League of American Bicyclists has designated May as National Bike Month; and WHEREAS: The Lawrence-Douglas County Bicycle Advisory Committee has requested that the Douglas County Commission proclaim the month of May 2012 as Bike Month. NOW, THEREFORE, Be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Douglas County, Kansas, that the month of May 2012 be recognized as "BIKE MONTH" and also proclaim the week of May 14-18, 2012 as "Bike-To-Work Week" in Douglas County, Kansas. ADOPTED this 25th day of April, 2012.
