Jury Convicts Lawrence Man of Driving Under the Influence

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announces today a jury convicted Lawrence resident Mark A. Edmonds, 56, of Driving Under the Influence. Mr. Edmonds is facing up to one year in the Douglas County Jail and a minimum $1,250 fine. His actual sentence will depend upon his prior criminal history. On December 30, 2010, just before 10:00 p.m., a deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to an injury accident in the 800 block of County Road 1055. The deputy found Mr. Edmonds car in the east ditch with heavy front end damage. Mr. Edmonds was the sole occupant of the car. The trial began Wednesday, closing arguments were delivered this morning and the jury deliberated for approximately one hour before returning its verdict. The Honorable Peggy C. Kittel presided over the case. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office investigated the case and Assistant District Attorney Greg Benefiel prosecuted it. The judge ordered an evaluation be completed and scheduled a sentencing hearing for July 20 at 1:30 p.m. This is Mr. Edmonds second DUI conviction.
