Trial Assistant in DA's Office Named President of North American Consumer Protection Investigators

08/16/2012
Trial Assistant Amber Capoun who works with the consumer protection division for District Attorney Charles Branson was one of about 35 consumer advocates from across the nation that attended the North American Consumer Protection Investigators (NACPI) national meeting August 5-8 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. At the Board of Directors meeting Wednesday evening, Ms. Capoun was nominated and voted in as the new president of the organization. She also received the Support to NACPI Award, which was presented by the Interim President. The award was for her enthusiasm to take on the quarterly newsletter, her willingness to help out when needed, her hard work and dedication over the years to NACPI and in appreciation for her time serving on the Executive Board as the Membership Chair. One of the presenters at the week's conference was Brodie Mack with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Moving Fraud. Mr. Mack discussed how they have recently formed a moving fraud working group. The group also heard from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on the fair debt collections practices act. The purpose of the Association and the conference is to provide training, networking opportunities with expert presenters, other consumer protection professionals and the exhibitors. The attendees had the opportunity to discuss current events and to learn what other agencies were doing to protect their local consumers. Additionally, membership in the group facilitates the possibility of working together on certain multijurisdictional cases. Ms. Capoun can be reached in the Consumer Protection Division of the DA's Office at 785-330-2849.
