Jury Convicts Lawrence Man of Aggravated Indecent Liberties and Aggravated Criminal Sodomy

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announces today a jury convicted Lawrence resident Dean O. Tapedo, 39, of Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child and Aggravated Criminal Sodomy. The charges trigger Jessica's Law, therefore Mr. Tapedo is facing life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years on each count when he is sentenced on October 2, at 8:30 a.m. The victim was a six year old girl. The crime occurred in the family home when the defendant was spending the night in October 2011. The trial began Wednesday, closing arguments were delivered Friday afternoon and the jury deliberated for approximately one hour Friday afternoon before retiring for the weekend. They returned this morning and deliberated for a little over an hour and a half before returning its verdict. The Honorable Barbara K. Huff presided over the case. The Lawrence Police Department investigated the case and Chief Assistant District Attorney Amy McGowan prosecuted it.
