Intersection of Route 12/Route 1055 (6th Street) in Baldwin City to be closed

09/24/2012
Beginning Monday, October 1, weather permitting, the intersection of Route 12 (State Lake Road) with Route 1055 (6th Street) in Baldwin City will be closed to all traffic. The closure is necessary to accommodate continued Phase 3 construction activities associated with the Route 1055 (6th Street) reconstruction project. It is anticipated the intersection will remain closed through the duration of the project. On September 4, Route 1055 (6th Street) was closed to through traffic from approximately 100' south of the westward leg of N 400 Road to the south side of the Route 12 (State Lake Road) intersection. Beginning Monday, October 1, the closure will be extended to approximately 500 feet north of the intersection of Route 12 (State Lake Road) with Route 1055 (6th Street). The intersection of the westward leg of N 400 Road with Route 1055 (6th Street) will remain closed throughout Phase 3 construction. This portion of Route 1055 is the third and final phase of the project to reconstruct Route 1055 (6th Street) from US-56 highway to Route 12. It is anticipated this section of Route 1055 will be closed through December 1, weather permitting. A detour will be marked for through traffic on Route 1055. The detour follows US-56 highway west to US-59 highway, north to Route 460 (N 650 Road), then east to Route 1055 (E 1700 Road). Local access to properties within the project limits will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. Reconstruction of this section of Route 1055 is the final phase of a larger project to reconstruct Route 1055 (6th Street) from US-56 highway (Ames Street) to Route 12 (State Lake Road). The work is being completed in three phases with the contractor generally working from south to north. Closures of Route 1055 are proceeding northward with each phase. Phases 1 and 2 are substantially complete and are open to unrestricted traffic. It is planned to have Route 1055 open to unrestricted traffic throughout the project length by December 1, weather permitting. The project involves reconstructing Route 1055 (6th Street) from US-56 highway (Ames Street) to Route 12 (State Lake Road). The road is being reconstructed to a three-lane urban arterial-type roadway with a continuous center turn lane, storm sewers and sidewalks. The north leg of the Route 1055 intersection with Route 12 (State Lake Road) will be widened to add a southbound left-turn lane. The north and south legs of the Route 1055/US-56 intersection were widened as part of Phase 1 construction to allow an additional turn lane and better alignment of the through lanes on each side of the intersection. New traffic signals will be installed at the Route 1055/US-56 intersection. Douglas County awarded the construction contract to R.D. Johnson Construction of Lawrence. They were the low bidder with a bid of $2,551,000. KDOT is funding 100% of construction costs for improvements to the US-56/Route 1055 intersection. Baldwin City and Douglas County will equally share all construction costs for improvements north of the intersection, except for sidewalks. Baldwin City is responsible for all sidewalk costs.
