Lone Star Lake to close for treatment of exotic weed

07/19/2013
Douglas County Public Works announces Lone Star Lake will be closed to water activities July 23-July 24 for treating Eurasian Watermilfoil (EWM) infestations with an herbicide. This exotic, invasive plant will be treated with Aquathol-K, an herbicide approved by the EPA for water application. This is the same chemical used in 2012 treatments of EWM. We currently plan to treat EWM on July 23-24, weather permitting. If treatment occurs as planned on July 23-24, Lone Star Lake will be closed to all water activities on the day of treatment. If weather or other issues prevent treatment on July 23-24, alternate treatment dates are July 30-31. In addition to staying out of the water and not fishing on those dates, it is recommended residents and park visitors keep dogs and other pets from drinking the treated lake water. The treated areas will be inspected 2-3 weeks after treatment. If deemed necessary, some areas may be spot treated at that time. We do not anticipate closing the lake for retreatment. Richard Sanders, Fisheries Biologist for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will actually apply the herbicide. Douglas County forces will assist Richard in the application. This year, the affected areas to be treated are estimated to total 5.3 acres. The affected areas treated in 2012 were estimated to be 13.5 acres.
