Lawrence Resident Charged With Attempted Second Degree Murder

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announces that John P. Barton, 23, of Lawrence has been charged with attempted second degree murder and will have a first appearance today at 3:00 p.m. in the Pro Tem Division of Douglas County District Court. Officers with the Lawrence Police Department were dispatched early Sunday morning to the 2300 block of Murphy Drive to what was initially believed to be an auto burglary call. Through law enforcement's investigation it was discovered that Barton knew the person shot and there may have been some type of altercation between the two earlier in the day. No further details or information on the case will be released until the next court hearing. The charge listed is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
