09/27/2013
Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor filed charges today against Monroe E. Lockhart III, Topeka in connection with the body of Corey Brown, Topeka who was found in rural Douglas County, Kansas on January 5, 2012. Brown was discovered missing from Topeka on January 3, 2012 when his vehicle was found abandoned in a Topeka parking lot. A burned vehicle owned by Mr. Lockhart was found that same day in Topeka. Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies began investigating the case after Brown's body was found. The Sheriff's Office and Douglas County District Attorney's office worked closely with the Topeka Police Department and Shawnee County District Attorney's Office. Charges were announced at a press conference in Topeka attended by Charles Branson, Douglas County District Attorney and members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Topeka Police Department, Shawnee County Sheriff's Department and Shawnee County District Attorney's Office. "The detectives with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office put in many long hours on this case over many months of investigation," Branson said. "Their work along with the dedicated assistance of Shawnee County District Attorney's Office and Topeka Police Department made this case happen." Charges were filed in Shawnee County because Brown was believed to have been killed in Topeka before his body was left in Douglas County near Lecompton. The charges listed are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. -30-
