Posted on 3/26/2014 4:45:00 PM

Douglas County Emergency Management looks forward to successfully completing our 2014 Pursuit of Preparedness Campaign, Thursday, March 27th with a presentation by Emergency Management staff on emergency preparedness to students at Lecompton Elementary School. The presentation will include general information on severe weather hazards for our area, as well as information on making an emergency plan, having an emergency kit, and staying informed before, during, and after an emergency/disaster.

As a special addition to the presentation and a culmination of a year-long effort, Douglas County Emergency Management will pass out over 160 basic emergency kits to the students attending the presentation. These kits are the focal point of the “Pursuit of Preparedness” campaign, which is a project that Douglas County Emergency Management looks to sustain and coordinate on an annual basis. Many of the items in the kits, including water, flashlights, hand sanitizer, hygiene kits, a whistle, among many other items, were donated by local businesses and organizations in Douglas County. Those who donated include: Black Hills Energy, Auburn Pharmacy, Midwest Diversified, Inc., Big Bill’s Automotive, Lawrence Community Shelter, Galen Van Blaricum, D.D.S. and Nealy Newkirk, D.D.S., Heck Family Dentistry, City of Lecompton, Midwest Card and ID Solutions, Child Care Aware of Northeast and North Central Kansas, King Pharmacy, Growing Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, Wal-Mart, Target, Truity Credit Union, Emprise Bank, Kansas Department of Transportation and Visiting Nurses.

The successful efforts of Douglas County Emergency Management and the 18 local businesses and organizations who donated kit items will help families of over 160 students better prepare themselves for an emergency or disaster.
