Lawrence Resident Sentenced for First Degree Murder of his Wife

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announces Lawrence resident Larry L. Hopkins, 67; was sentenced yesterday by the Court to serve lifetime in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections without the possibility of parole for 25 years for the first degree murder of his wife Margaret Hopkins.

Officers with the Lawrence Police Department were dispatched to the 1600 block of West Second Terrace in Lawrence on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at approximately 8:45 a.m. Mr. Hopkins called the Douglas County Emergency Communications Center and reported he had just shot his wife. Officers entered the home and found Mrs. Hopkins in bed with a gunshot wound to her head. After officers declared the residence secure and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical personnel were admitted into the residence, they declared her deceased.

The hearing was held in the courtroom of the Honorable Michael J. Malone. The case was investigated by the Lawrence Police Department and was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Cathe Decena and Andrew Bauch.
