The Douglas County Public Works Department announces that beginning Monday, July 14, Route 458 (N 1200 Road) will be closed from E 902 Road (the lower Clinton Dam road) to US-59 highway for a project to add paved shoulders, rehabilitate pavement and improve roadside safety.  The improvement project is anticipated to be completed and the roadway reopened to traffic by October 31, 2014, weather permitting.

A signed detour will be established.  The detour follows US-59 highway to K-10 highway (SLT) to E 900/N 1150 Road (the upper road on Clinton Lake dam).  Local access to properties within the road closure will be maintained throughout the duration of the project.

While Route 458 is closed for construction, people traveling to the west and south sides of Clinton Lake from Lawrence should use Route 442 (Stull Road) and Route 1023/458 south from Stull.  People traveling to the same area from the south should use US-56 highway (N 300 Road) to Route 1029 (E 550 Road).  People wishing to access the Clinton Lake marina area and northeast portion of Clinton Lake should use Clinton Parkway or K-10 highway (SLT) to E 900 Road (the upper Clinton Lake dam road).

The purpose of the project is to improve safety by constructing 6.5’-wide paved shoulders and flattening roadside slopes throughout the project’s length, and rehabilitate the existing pavement by patching and overlaying.   The project also includes patching and a polymer overlay of the concrete bridge deck carrying Route 458 over Washington Creek to preserve and extend the life of the bridge.

This construction project is funded by Douglas County’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and by $500,000 in Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP) funding from the Federal Highway Administration.  The Board of County Commissioners awarded the construction contract to Hamm, Inc. who submitted the low bid of $1,489,148.69.
